Concertina Connection
This European manufacturer has produced a line of concertinas which are
a low-cost alternative for the beginning player. They are made using
partly European parts to the Concertina Connection's specifications in
China. They feature a riveted action mechanism, accordion-style reeds,
and come as a complete outfit including a soft case and a
tutor.
As these boxes are so robust - and as most beginner concertina players want to "trade up" after playing a beginner box a while - we offer a full purchase price trade-in value when a Concertina Connection instrument (originally bought from us) is traded in for one of our R. Morse & Co. concertinas.
Stagi
(Formerly Bastari) continues to be the concertina of choice for the
beginning to intermediate player. All models have steel accordion-style
reeds. Their mellow tone makes them ideally suited for song
accompaniment.
All Stagi concertinas go through our thorough
tuning and maintenance process
before they are shipped -- the Button Box is the only retailer that
performs this service to your new instrument, at no extra cost.
R.
Morse & Co.
The Button Box is proud to announce our own line of concertinas, made
here in New England. Designed to bridge the gap between the
less
expensive Italian-made models and the custom-made traditional designs,
R.
Morse & Co. concertinas offer a high quality,
moderately priced
alternative to the low-end vintage market. Our Anglo model is
known as the Céilí, and our
English concertina is the Albion.
A Morse concertina can be ordered with a $50 nonrefundable deposit.
Delivery time is currently 16-20 weeks. See listings below for more
details.
We are currently working on a Morse Hayden duet. Our model is still in the R&D stage, so at this point we are unable to provide a date when it will be available.
English system concertinas are fully chromatic instruments with each button producing the same note on the push and pull of the bellows. Each end has 4 columns of buttons: the two center columns correspond to the natural (white) keys on a piano, and the outside columns are the accidental (black) keys. The notes of a scale alternate between the left and right sides. The number of buttons varies from 30 to 70, but 48 is standard. The different sizes originally corresponded to the members of the violin family, with the 48-button treble model having the range of the violin (G below the staff to C three octaves above middle C). They are very smooth and agile instruments, originally designed for classical music, but well-suited to folk music and chordal song accompaniment.
All models are tuned to a1=440hz.

Anglo concertinas have a diatonic system similar to the button accordion: each button gives a different note on the push and pull. The lower notes of the scale are on the left side, and the higher notes are on the right. The number of buttons varies from 20 to 50. Instruments with 30 or more buttons are chromatic through a certain range but are most often played in only a few "home" keys. Anglo concertinas are well suited for song accompaniment, Morris and Irish music.
All models are tuned to a1=440hz.

Duet system concertinas were a later development that incorporated the best features of the Anglo and English systems; they are fully chromatic, have the same note on the push and pull, and have the lower range on the left side and the higher range on the right, thus allowing the melody and full accompaniment to be played in any key on one instrument. A number of different fingering systems have been developed over the years: McCann, Crane (or Triumph), Jeffries, and most recently, the Hayden system. While the older duet systems were without a doubt the most difficult concertinas to master, many consider the Hayden system even easier to learn than the English or anglo.
We are currently working on a Morse Hayden duet. Our model is still in the R&D stage, so at this point we are unable to provide a date when it will be available.
Both C&R Dipper and C.
Wheatstone & Co. make superlative duets on a special
order basis. Contact information is available from us on request.
