The day's events start at 9 a.m. with a general welcome, refreshments, and a chance to meet the staff. The morning workshops run from 10 to noon and will be followed by a break for lunch. The two afternoon sessions will run from 1:30 to 5:00 followed by a wrap-up session until about 5:30, leaving time for networking, jamming and dinner before the 7:30 p.m. concert.

Please indicate your workshop preferences by filling in the boxes below; please write a "1" and "2" for each period to indicate your first and second choice.

Proficiency - Some workshops are geared for specific skill levels. Please consider these guidelines when filling out this form
  • Beginner Level - People who have a handle on the main notes of the instrument, have some knowledge of note names, and can find their way around a few tunes (at a slow tempo is okay).
  • Intermediate Level - People who can play in a few keys and meters (reels, jigs, etc.), have a fair sense of rhythm, and can play at a moderate pace.
  • Advanced Level - People who can play with fluency in several keys, modes and meters who have a good understanding of the layout of the instrument and can play at tempo.

Irish-Style Anglo Concertina B FE Irish-Style Anglo Concertina
Irish Dance Music for the English Concertina B,I RC Rhythmic and melodic methods to "translate" traditional Irish dance music to the English concertina. Notated examples will be used.
Beginning English Concertina B JH Holding and manipulating your concertina, note finding, playing scales, working on an easy tune and choosing a concertina tutor book.
Song Accompaniment I I IR Some strategies for building a song accompaniment by ear. Working from the melody and/or from a chord structure. Suiting the accompaniment to your voice and to the song. Participants are welcome to bring a song they are working on. For English concertinas.
Beginning English Style Anglo B JR Finding simple melodies with basic fingering on the right side and accompaniment on the left side.
Chords and Harmony

I DB Choosing chords and improvising harmony lines - discoveries and implementation from a music theory approach. Geared toward duet concertinas though insightful for other types of concertinas.

English-Style Anglo Accompaniment I JR Realizing the notes in both bellows directions for bass runs and chords for typical major and minor tunes from traditional English repertoire.
History of the Concertina B,I,A RC Presentation of historic concertinas, field recordings, historic photos and materials on all systems.
Learning Tunes by Ear B+ DB Recognizing tune types, basic tune structure and note sequences/patterns as aids to learning tunes by "ear" - and applying the techniques to learning a few tunes. For all types of concertinas.
Song Accompaniment II I IR More strategies for building a song accompaniment by ear. This is NOT a "continuation" of the first class nor is the first class prerequisite to taking this class. New material and techniques are presented. For English concertinas.

Song Accompaniment B,I JR How to effectively support your singing with interesting backup without drowning out the words. For all types of concertinas.
Playing Well With Others I IR Some things to try when you're in a band. Helping the rhythm section; creating texture; taking cues; matching playing styles with other melody instruments. For all types of concertinas.
Classical Concertina Techniques B,I,A JH Approaches to solving problems specific to playing classical music on the concertina. Most techniques are adaptations from classical piano study: touch, practicing difficult sequences of notes, finding good fingerings for complicated passages, bellows technique. For all types of concertinas and skill levels.
Tune Round Robin I,A DB Farewell to Whiskey - come prepared to show how you play it. We'll discuss our decisions, critique others and come away with new insights. "New" tunes will be presented for on-the-fly accompaniment work/discussions as time permits.
Arranging for the English I,A RC Showing how to go beyond playing the melody alone on two dance tunes and songs.  Should have the ability to read music or be an adept ear player.
Concertina Repair B,I,A BS Focusing on leaks. Tracking them down and using appropriate materials and techniques for lasting repairs. Q&A for other types of repairs as time permits. For all concertina systems.


A class in Beginning Hayden Duet is available by Richard Morse. Check this box if you are interested and we will be in touch with you to work out the best class period and staff/participant logistics we can.

The Fine Print:

Registration: The $110 (pre-registration or $120 on-site) fee is for the entire event (plus $14 for the optional catered lunch). You are not required to attend all workshop sessions or the evening concert, but there is no reduced fee for partial participation. Please note that meals and overnight lodging are NOT included.

Cancellations: Cancellations before April 1 will receive a full refund. Cancellations received between April 1 and April 17 will receive a 50% refund. No refunds after April 17.

Oversubscription: Some workshops have a maximum limit. Please give a second choice for all workshops. Also, please let us know if you have any specific learning interests and concerns, and we will forward your comments to the staff.
