The days events start at 9 a.m. with a general welcome, refreshments and a chance to meet the staff. The morning workshop runs from 10 to noon and will be followed by a break for lunch. The two afternoon workshops will run from 1:30 to 5:00 with a wrap-up session going to about 5:30, leaving a couple of hours for networking, jamming and dinner before the 7:30 p.m. concert.

Please indicate your workshop preferences by filling in the boxes below; please write a "1" and "2" for each period to indicate your first and second choice. This is NOT the final schedule - depending on the response, it may change somewhat to accommodate participants' choices.

Proficiency - These workshops are geared for specific skill levels in order to better suit participants. Please consider these guidelines when filling out this form
  • Beginner Level - People who have a handle on the main notes of the instrument, have some knowledge of note names, and can find their way around a few tunes (at a slow tempo is okay).
  • Intermediate Level - People who can play in a few keys and meters (reels, jigs, etc.), have a fair sense of rhythm, and can play at a moderate pace (not necessarily full speed).
  • Advanced Level - People who can play with fluency in several keys, modes and meters; have a good understanding of tye layout of the instrument and play at tempo.

Translating pipe tunes to the anglo - drones, chromatics and accidentals with classics Seamus Ennis’ Gold Ring, and/or the Fox Hunter’s reel with piping drones and alternate fingerings... onto a few Cape Breton tunes, a Swedish walking tune, an original Bertram Levy chord-based “Circus Tune,” and maybe parts of a Bach Chaconne.

Alternate fingerings, ornamentation, D and A scales and double C# button theory using Crosses of Annagh and Merrily Kissed the Quaker’s Wife plus a selection of slowed down jigs, reels, hornpipes, and polkas.

BP Finding simple tunes on the right hand buttons of the instrument, and introducing the concept of playing by ear. Basic principles of left hand
chording to accompany tunes. C/G Anglo desirable.
Simple Tunes for English concertina B+ KS Working through several common traditional dance tunes in the keys of C and G. Emphasis on basic fingering techniques, phrasing and stylistic rhythm. We'll be applying this to some tunes learned "by ear".
Morris Dance for the English Concertina I RC "Anglo style" (William Kimber) arrangements for the English concertina player. Stylistic techniques and easy to advanced arrangements of many tunes.
Variations on a Theme
B,I JJ Exploring different ways to arrange the same tune - applicable to all duet systems.
Principles of Concertina Construction and Repair
B,I,A BS Disassembly and dismemberment of different types of concertina constructions will be performed, examined and explained to help people understand the basic principles by which they operate. This will enable players to make effective and appropriate repairs at home or on the road. For all concertina systems.

Beginning Irish-Syle on Anglo Concertina B

Basic diatonic, cross-key fingering and bellows action/“breathing” techniques using The Butcher’s March or similar basic cross-key tune in G using only two fingers on each hand. Introduction of the D scale concept with added C#’s.
Irish-Style Anglo A CS Air control, key of "A" fingering, ornamentation (triplets, chords/bass notes), variation, tone. Emphasis on good rhythmic habits. Introduction to polka/slide rhythm.
English-Style Anglo Techniques I,A BP Expression, phrasing, choice of staccato or legato, use of air button. Moving beyond the home keys, and finding interesting chords to accompany tunes. C/G Anglo desirable.
History of the Concertina B,I,A RC Presentation of historic concertinas, field recordings, historic photos and materials on all systems.
Duet Versatility I,A JJ Exploring many techniques that show how many genres of songs/tunes can be made interesting.
Song Accompaniment

Exploring the many ways a concertina can be used to enhance a song without overpowering it - from rousing saltwater choruses to quiet soulful ballads: chord options, arrangements, mood/flavor matching, etc. Bring a song to share for critiqueing, or just come to listen and try things out.

The Fine Print:

Registration: The $95 registration fee is for the entire event (plus $12 for the optional catered lunch). You are not required to attend all workshop sessions or the evening concert, but there is no reduced fee for partial participation. Please note that meals and overnight lodging are NOT included.

Cancellations: Cancellations before April 1 will receive a full refund. Cancellations on or after April 1 will receive a 50% refund. There is no refund for no-shows.

Oversubscription: Some workshops have a maximum limit. Please give a second choice for all workshops. Also, please let us know if you have any specific learning interests and concerns, and we will forward your comments to the staff.
